Vittorio Lingiardi, M.D., born in Milan in 1960, is psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is Full Professor of Dynamic Psychology and past Director (2006-2013) of the Clinical Psychology Specialization Program in the Department of Dynamic and Clinical Psychology of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, Sapienza University of Rome.
From 1987 to 1995 he spent time as a visiting student in the USA and Canada: at the Menninger Clinic (Topeka, Kansas), Chestnut Lodge Clinic (Rockville, Maryland), and McGill University (Montreal, Canada). From 1988 to 1998 he worked as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
His research interests include:
- Diagnostic assessment and treatment of personality disorders
- Process-outcome research in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy
- Defense mechanisms
- Therapeutic alliance, transference and countertransference
- Gender identity and sexual orientation.
He has published widely on these topics, as the author of several Italian books and many international articles including papers in the American Journal of Psychiatry, Archives of Sexual Behavior, Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Journal of Personality Assessment, Journal of Personality Disorders, International Journal of Psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Psychoanalytic Psychology, Psychotherapy, World Psychiatry.
He and Nancy McWilliams comprised the Steering Committee of the new edition of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2; Guilford Press, 2017; Raffaello Cortina, 2018).
He won the Ralph Roughton Paper Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2014; the “Viareggio-Giuria” Award for Mindscapes (Raffaello Cortina, 2017); the Cesare Musatti Award of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI) in 2018; the American Board & Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize (Clinical section) for the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2) in 2018. He was the Author of the Month for the Guilford Press, New York, USA, in December 2017. He has held positions on the Boards of the Italian Association of Psychology (AIP – Section on Dynamic and Clinical Psychology), the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR, Italian chapter), and the European Society for the Study of Personality Disorders (ESSPD). His government service includes positions on both the steering committee for the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research, and the scientific committee of the Anti-Discrimination Office of the Italian Department for Equal Opportunities.
He is the chief editor of the series “Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Psychotherapy” for the publishing house Raffaello Cortina (Milan), and an editorial board member of Sapienza University Press (Rome).
He writes for the cultural supplement Domenica of the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, for the newspaper La Repubblica and for the magazine Venerdì di Repubblica (a weekly column on cinema and psychoanalysis called “Psycho”).
He is the author of two books of poetry: La confusione è precisa in amore (Love is a Precise Confusion; Edizioni Nottetempo, 2012) and Alterazioni del ritmo (Rhythm Disorders; Edizioni Nottetempo, 2015).
