Bergamo is a marvel for its history, culture, music, and landscape, featuring a medieval heart perched on a hill, encircled by the imposing Venetian Walls now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Explore it on foot through historic villages, towers, churches, funiculars, and stairways that climb through the greenery of the surrounding Colli Park, and be captivated by the unexpected vistas over the plains and mountains.
Bergamo is the city of Donizetti, one of the five great opera composers in the world: trace the life of this 19th-century opera composer starting from his birthplace in Bergamo Alta and follow his footsteps among the relics at the Donizettiano Museum, his tomb in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the local theater named after him, where his greatest hits are applauded every season.
From musical masterpieces to those of art, like Botticelli, Mantegna, Bellini, and Raphael: these masters can be encountered here, in the halls of the Accademia Carrara, an art gallery with one of the most important collections of Italian Renaissance works in Europe.
Masterpieces to discover along with the works of Moroni, a genius of 16th-century Bergamasque portraiture, present in collections of the world’s major museums, and with him, Lotto, who left precious works of art here, altar panels, and designs for inlaid marquetry, mysterious inlays in rare woods.
The paths of art intertwine with those of history in a city of ancient origins: Bergamo Alta surrounded by walls with its medieval atmosphere preserves among the narrow cobblestone streets ancient Roman remains, Renaissance churches, 18th-century palaces, and neoclassical façades, overlooking the famous Piazza Vecchia, a few steps from the museums.
The 20th and 21st centuries, on the other hand, find a home in the heart of Bergamo Bassa, from the contemporary art gallery Gamec and its Sentierone, the walk of the Bergamasques, created where once the ancient fair stood, from which unfold paths of architecture between the last century and the buildings of great star architects.
Surrounded by historic villages, the city center also offers shopping and entertainment, where you can enjoy a coffee and take a break before choosing between festivals, cultural proposals, concerts, and performances in a city that is lively even in the evening or have a drink before dinner in one of Bergamo’s restaurants, where you can also try casoncelli, the prime dish of local cuisine.
No fewer than 9 PDO cheeses, fine meats, excellent wines, and traditional recipes are just some of the ways to discover Bergamo also from a gastronomic perspective, going beyond the city, exploring also the province: from food to culture and nature, where the city gives way to rivers, valleys, plains, and the mountains that behind Città Alta complete its unmistakable skyline.
